Curator’s comments

Included in this retrospective piece are sections that refer to Robinson's trip to Africa in 1979; her visits to Sapelo Island, Georgia, in 1983 and in 1996; and her residencies at P.S. I in New York City in 1989 and in Herzilya, Israel, in the summer of 1998... Historical references document the Black Laws that were enacted in 1804... Columbus events and landmarks include a mass meeting at the Ohio Statehouse when the Emancipation Proclamation was declared and Water Street before the flood of 1913.

This monumental work and a companion piece of approximately the same size were installed at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati in 2005.

Artist’s comments

I call this Journeys because it is a sharing of the places I've been and of Columbus, Ohio, which I never forget. It is also a journey through history, through African-American life from the Middle Passage on.
