Artist’s comments

I began drawing at the age of three. My father would give me wood to paint on and paint in a little enamel tin. My studio was under my bed. I wouldn't allow anyone to mess with my paints or my brushes and my materials. I never had any doubt in my mind about being an artist. I had my first exhibition when I was eight years old. I hung my pictures on a clothesline with pins at the corner of Mt. Vernon and Champion during a church revival. My father knew and he taught me certain things that I needed to know in order to survive as an artist. If it had not been for my father, I wouldn't have made it through.
