Curator’s comments

Aminah participated in a six-week study trip to Africa in 1979. The trip inspired a body of work consisting of hundreds of pieces that she called Afrikan Pilgrimage. the Extended Family. Many of the works are on homemade paper that she had prepared before she left Columbus.

Artist’s comments

Uncle Alvin [Alvin Fitzgerald Zimmerman (1915-1990)] told me that in the early days people wrapped the body of someone who had died in cloth and walked the body to the graveyard. All night long before the burial, people would sit up with the body so that the dead person's spirit would have company. I saw the same kind of thing in Africa.
