Curator’s comments

For more than sixty years in Columbus, folk artist Elijah Pierce (1892-1984) created woodcarvings inspired by biblical stories, animal folk tales, current events, and pop culture. He earned his living as a barber, and his shop on Long Street was his studio, a gallery for his colorful carvings, and a gathering place for Columbus's African-American community.

Artist’s comments

This painting is from studies I did in Mr. Pierce's studio and a lot from memory because I knew his heart and spirit, and I could draw him. The goodness of his life and his spirit and his heart were like threads of a blanket that covered everything around him and that included me. I was touched very deeply by his life and his wisdom and those things he gave to me as an artist.
