Curator’s comments

Afrikan Pilgrimage: The Extended Family is the body of work inspired by Aminah's six-week study trip to Africa in 1979. The trip, organized by a Cleveland-based group, the American Forum for Study, included stops in Senegal, Kenya, Nigeria, and Egypt. During these travels, Aminah marveled at the connections she found between her own family and life in Columbus and the people she met and the communities she visited.

Artist’s comments

On the streets of Nigeria, one sees the most beautifully dressed people in all of Africa. Most of the cloth they wear is hand-printed, hand-batique with indigo made out of dye. It is often hand-woven. The marketplaces in Nigeria were the greatest attraction for me as it afforded me the opportunity to observe and paint the peoples.
