Curator’s comments

Columbus woodcarver and barber Elijah Pierce is shown full length, seated comfortably in his studio- barbershop, smoking a pipe. He seems to be taking a break from his barbering and carving and is wistfully looking off somewhere. All the incidental details-- paint cans, stove, shaving dish, stools, notebook, the sign above the door, and the picture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. --lend to the feeling of actually experiencing the place.
