Curator’s comments

In 1989, Aminah spent seven months as a resident artist at P.S. 1 in Queens, NY. She "studied" the city by walking the streets and riding the subway. On a random subway ride on the C Train, she witnessed the unexpected and difficult birth of a baby.

Artist’s comments

One day I got on the C Train and I didn't know where I was going. This lady was groaning on the floor and she was getting ready to have this baby. The men were holding the doors so the people couldn't come in from the other trains. The baby turned blue, but the minute we stopped, they rushed the baby and mother to the hospital, and they did fine.
