Curator’s comments

Aminah participated in a six-week study trip to Africa in 1979. The trip inspired a body of work consisting of hundreds of pieces that the artist called Afrikan Pilgrimage: The Extended Family. Aminah brought art materials with her and did many drawings during the trip and she continued producing work including paintings and sculptures in this series after she returned home.

Artist’s comments

This is about the family - the nation is within the family. Trying to resurrect that family and keep it connected was very, very important to me. During slavery we were all separated, and somehow the enslaved women tried to keep the family together. Even after slavery it was the women who tried to keep the family intact.
