Artist’s comments

The reason I call it the Ark is because it comes out of the Bible - the feeling of the ark, Noah's Ark. Despite the tragedy and horrendous slave trade of the Middle Passage, the people survived and carried on traditions. The Ark shows what many African women did before they would endure the agony of slavery. They would jump overboard with their children or throw their children overboard. The ones who stayed made it possible for me and the rest of us to here. They survived it. I think that it is divine and because of God's intervention that they survived. And so it's this feeling of both the Ark and the Middle Passage. As horrendous as it was, there is something good that has come out of it.
