This story was told to Robinson by her friend, Ursel White Lewis, who is the granddaughter of Alonzo Jackson.

Artist’s comments

The interpretation of the life and times of Alonzo Jackson revolved around nine years, 1972-1981.... In this nine year period, Mrs. Lewis continued to relate to me the Life and Times of Alonzo Jackson: his experiences and life on the plantations; his life as a slave; and finally, his experiences as a Civil War Soldier and Veteran. The important thing to note is that Alonzo Jackson and many other Civil War Veterans gave money to help build the first Black College here in America, the Missouri - Lincoln Institute....
