Artist’s comments

Making soap was something my family did. We made the soap from bacon grease about every six months. We put lilac or rose oil from the drugstore in it to make it smell sweet. It was made in a big sheet, put in the closet to harden, and then cut in pieces. My older sister Sue is sitting there working with my parents, my younger sister Sharron is holding a piece of soap, and, of course, I'm sitting there feeding the birds. (Symphonic Poem p. 112)
