Curator’s comments

"In his well-known book on African and African- American art and philosophy, Flash of the Spirit, Robert Farris Thompson observes that groups of round-houses in various parts of Africa create a sense of community and social cohesion." (Symphonic Poem p. 107)

Artist’s comments

The necklace is round, like many houses in Africa. The circular form is very protective- there are no edges or corners for evil to penetrate. For me, Poindexter was safe and protective. Inside the necklace are housed the stories about Poindexter and especially the Crowman tales that carry on the traditions of that community. (Symphonic Poem p. 107)
