Curator’s comments

For more than sixty years, Columbus folk artist Elijah Pierce (1892-1984) created woodcarvings inspired by biblical stories, animal folk tales, current events, and pop culture. He earned his living as a barber, and his shop on Long Street was a gathering place for the city's African-American community and also housed a gallery for his colorful carvings. Pierce and Aminah, who met in the 1970s, enjoyed a warm friendship until his death.
