Curator’s comments

In ancient cultures of Egypt and Mesopotamia as well as in the biblical account of the copper serpent (Numbers 21:6-10), protective and healing qualities are associated with serpents.

Artist’s comments

The Teachings and The Spirituals come out of the people, out of slavery, out of the songs mothers pass to children, and out of the stories generations passed on to generations. I think a mother and child is very sacred, and I think communities around the world are very, very sacred. The serpent in this piece is protecting the community.
