Curator’s comments

In the early 1970s, after Aminah and her husband separated, Aminah struggled to support herself and her young son. After her exhaustive search for work failed, she was forced to apply for welfare despite her parents' strong disapproval. In this drawing, Aminah depicts the room where people wait to receive their welfare checks. The subjects' body language and facial expressions suggest the desperation of their situations and the isolation that each feels from the other.
