Curator’s comments

This book, which is on handmade paper, is contained in Dad's Journey, Aminah's memorial to her father. Dad's Journey begins in Africa with her father's ancestors and ends when her father's family migrates to Columbus, Ohio, hundreds of years later. Nightmare of Horrors depicts the forced journey of thousands of Africans across the Atlantic to slavery in the Americas. It features drawings of people choosing to jump from the ship in shark-infested waters rather than complete the journey and become slaves in America. The emotive power of this work and the brilliance of the simple but anguished postures of the bodies as they fall, reveal the intensity of the artist's pain upon the collective remembrance of the past.
