Curator’s comments

Aminah painted Dream to Accomplish while she was attending the Columbus Art School in the late 1950s. The bold handling of the paint, the distorted figures, and the vibrant colors place the work stylistically in the expressionist tradition. Several figures with enlarged but radically different shaped heads seem to be engaged in a seance or a ritual involving a chicken. The supernatural is palpably present. Aminah's emphasis on heads and eyes, found throughout her work, appears to have its origin in this painting. Dream to Accomplish is accompanied by a text, which she attached to the side of the painting. The words reflect her musings about her future as an artist.
