Artist’s comments

The Blackberry Patch came before Poindexter village. It was called that because there were many wild blackberries that grew there. A lot of people think it was because it was a black community, but that was not the case. Poindexter and the Blackberry Patch are one and the same because in 1940 many of the children of the Blackberry Patch moved into Poindexter, one of the first federally funded metropolitan housing developments in the country.
