Artist’s comments

This is my mother and my sister Sharron's child, Diedre. My mother is passing on the hand-me-down traditions to her granddaughter- spinning, crocheting, knitting, quilting, button work. The work is on Pellon, which I enjoy working on- a nonwoven fabric used for backing leather and other materials- it's cheap but it's really strong. I used pen and ink, pastel, whatever I could get. I do cross hatching like this in all of my drawings. Here I'm using a reed pen- it's bigger and wider- and sometimes I use a very, very tiny quill point and it takes longer- hours and hours and hours. The reed pens are made from bamboo in China.
